More on Mars: A Look at "Avatar"

A few posts ago I wrote about Mars: what a strong Mars is, and what it might look like in images. The movie Avatar provides rich material for a further discussion of Mars, both good and bad. (Actually, we could discuss all of the planets using this great film--but we will focus on Mars for now.)

The movie provides us with an archetypal example of Mars in detriment in the form of the RDA Corporation and its private military force. The story takes place several centuries from now on an exotic, beautiful and lush moon called Pandora in the Alpha-Centauri star system.

Mars is in detriment in the two signs opposite those it rules. Imagining that the RDA is signified by Mars, I see it as Mars in Taurus. Taurus is the fixed Earth sign, ruled by Venus, and symbolizes (among a million other things) earthly riches. This is precisely what RDA covets: an extremely valuable mineral called unobtanium. The corporation can profit hugely by mining this mineral, and it will stop at nothing to get it. This is precisely why Mars is in detriment—this is the wrong thing to do. RDA doesn’t care who it hurts or what it destroys—it just wants those riches!

Of course, the largest deposit of unobtanium is found directly beneath Hometree, the sacred habitat of the Omaticaya clan of the Na’vi, the native population of Pandora. When it becomes clear that it can obtain this mineral no other way, RDA attacks the Omaticaya to clear them from the area by force. They succeed in destroying both the Tree of Voices and Hometree (gut-wrenching scenes in the movie) before turning to attack the Tree of Souls, the clan's most sacred location.

I don’t want to give away too much for those of you who haven’t seen the movie yet! But I must mention that our protagonist, Jake Sully, is at first an agent of RDA and therefore acting as Mars in detriment. However, he undergoes a transformation and becomes a great hero and warrior. Once this happens, I see him as Mars in Aries, both because this transformation is a rebirth for him (Aries is the first sign of the zodiac) and because Mars in Aries exalts the Sun, which is God/Goddess (known as Eywa in the movie). Sully truly becomes a servant of the Goddess as he chooses ‘right action’ and… Well, I encourage you to go see the movie!

Job prediction holds true

I’m happy to announce that the .5 position has indeed come through as predicted! I received the offer on Tuesday 2/16/10. Horary astrology really works—when we astrologers get it right.

Note that this event happened a full month before I predicted it would. To that I can only repeat my teacher in saying that timing is the trickiest part of horary practice. Jupiter, the job, was about two and a half degrees away from changing signs, leaving Aquarius and gaining major essential dignity in Pisces. In clock time this turned out to be just under six weeks. I tried to be too precise, taking 2.5 degrees to mean 2.5 months (knowing 2.5 weeks was too soon). “Within about two months” would have been a better statement of timing, as it turns out.

In retrospect we can see that Jupiter moving out of Saturn dignities did not mean the job wasn’t interested in me any longer. Moving into its own rulership simply signified the improvement from ‘pool’ to permanent position with benefits. When I animate the chart (tracking its actual movements through time), Jupiter and the Ascendant move together into partile conjunction at 0 Pisces.

I give thanks to Spirit for blessing me with this job!

My bro first told me so

Time to eat humble pie: I got it wrong.

Please note that it is not the astrology that is wrong. The chart shows the truth. I just didn't see it.

Before I continue, I must give credit to my brother, Steve Pintar. On Saturday morning very early he emailed me the following message:

Hey Lovely Sis...

I'll make it easy for ya! Saints are gonna win.

Most of the country is on the Peyton Manning/Colts bandwagon. They are wrong. Why? Because everyone looks at the bottom line only and not the context.

Make sense? In sports, there are two simple rules. (1) "Who have you played?" (2) "Who have you beaten?"

In the case of the Colts, the answer is "None" and "None." LOL!!
The Saints have actually have proven much more... they've beaten (a) Patriots (by much more than the Colts) (b) Jets (by more than Colts) (c) Cards (beat them in PLAYOFFS... when they were HOT... unlike Colts who beat them early in year when COLD) and (d) and most importantly... VIKINGS....perhaps the best team. People make the argument Saints shouldn't have won, but the fact is they DID. They beat a team when they should have lost, which is the sign of a GREAT team!

Take my word... Saints are gonna win (maybe even easily)... which is gonna perplex and confound most everyone, but you'll be able to say... 'My bro first told me so'... LOL.

So where did I go wrong? Here are my thoughts.

1) Combustion aside, Venus has more dignity than Mars. That's probably it right there.

2) Venus is 3.18 degrees separated from the Sun. Although this is still combust, Venus is moving away from the Sun, so the worst is over. Retrograde Mars is applying to oppose the Sun, which is also a malefic in opposition. So Mars is more afflicted by the Sun than Venus is.

3) Jupiter, our greater benefic, exalts Venus. Jupiter likes Mars, too (by triplicity) but exaltation is stronger.  Jupiter's antiscion falls in the 7th house at 28.17 Libra, which gives that house an edge.

4) Reception between/among Saturn, Venus and Mars. Mars and Saturn are in each other's detriment and so hate each other. Venus and Saturn are in each other's signs and so love each other. Why Saturn should matter, I am not sure. The Moon is applying to it, suggestion the action is moving that way. That could be why.

Well, there you have it folks! Thanks for tuning in. I am hoping my brother will ask a few sports horaries very soon—college basketball, anyone?—so I have a chance to get another one right.

Most importantly, kudos to the Saints—it's a great night for the city of New Orleans.

Super Bowl Prediction!

Hubby, a true and longtime fan of the Indianapolis Colts, asks:

”Will my team, the Colts, win the Super Bowl?”
January 25, 2010, 10:11 am CST, Milwaukee, WI

In sports horaries we look for testimonies that tell us which house and planetary ruler—first or seventh--is stronger. The stronger one will win the game.

The Colts, as hubby’s team, get the first house and its ruler, Mars. The Saints get the seventh house and its ruler, Venus.

First we look at the houses themselves. Is anything going on there? Mars’s own antiscion falls in the first and Venus’s in the seventh. Both are in detriment, which could mean self-affliction (e.g., bungling the ball, penalties). The antiscia are opposed, as are Venus and Mars themselves; maybe this will be an especially rough game. But this doesn’t tell us which of the two houses is stronger.

Next, let’s look at the condition of each planet. Mars is peregrine and retrograde—in pretty bad shape—and placed in the decent fifth house. Venus has very minor dignity (face) and is placed the eleventh, another good house. However, Venus but is combust at 3.18 degrees separated from the Sun (in its own detriment in Aquarius). By now our reader is well familiar with combustion. There is no worse state than combustion, so even though Mars is in bad shape, Venus is worse. Therefore, the Colts will win the game.

Can it be that simple? Perhaps! I have looked thoroughly at the rest of the chart, examining the receptions (especially with Saturn), the remaining antiscia, Jupiter, the Moon, etc. but I see nothing that clearly contradicts the above judgment. So we will stand by it.

If it turns out that I’ve got it wrong, I have saved the rest of my analysis for the game’s post-mortem. We will sort it out then.

On Sunday we will be guests of a dear friend from New Orleans and her family—Saints fans, but not hostile to the Colts. Hubby, of course, will be rooting for the Colts.

Here’s to a good and exciting game!

Mars: National Guard

A few weekends ago we went to see “Avatar” at the cinema. Just before the movie, the house played a promotional piece for the National Guard. The video is very powerful and effective (all opinions of the US military aside). Immediately I thought of the planet Mars and what Mars energy truly is, at its best:  Right action. Right action means doing what is called for--what is right and best in any situation--regardless of the risks involved. This is what the archetypal warrior does. Here’s the text from the piece:

At this moment, failure is not an option
At this moment, we serve the nation
At this moment, what will you do?

I will always place the mission first
I will never accept defeat
I will never quit
I will never leave a fallen comrade

Loyalty
Duty
Respect
Selfless Service
Honor
Integrity
Personal Courage
Citizen, Soldier
National Guard

We all have Mars energy within us. What kind of Mars energy it is, and how it expresses in our lives, is determined by its dignities in our chart. First, essential dignities: Mars is good and strong in Aries and Scorpio, the two signs it rules. Mars is exalted (exaggerated goodness/strength) in Capricorn.  Mars is in detriment in Libra and Taurus, opposite the signs it rules.  Here Mars is a bad guy. Mars is in fall (exaggerated bad guy) in Cancer, opposite Capricorn.

This National Guard promo attempts to show us the best/strongest possible Mars. In a hypothetical chart, what would this look like? Examining all essential dignities, we find that Mars is strongest in the first six degrees of Scorpio (0.00 to 5.59). There it is ruler and in its own triplicity, term and face—a clean sweep of the available essential dignities! (No planet is exalted in Scorpio.) Next we consider accidental dignities: house placement. If we imagine this Scorpio Mars being on one of the four chart angles, especially the first (Ascendant) or tenth (Midheaven), we then have our ultimate citizen soldier and hero.
