Kentucky wins! (as predicted)

Kentucky beat Cornell handily, 62-45.  The underdogs did come out strong in the first few minutes with a 10-2 lead, but soon after they fell behind and never took the lead again.  The closest Cornell got to Kentucky for the rest of the game was eight points.

This shows us that the Moon on cusp 7 was not testimony enough for Cornell to win.  Moon to antiscion Fortuna, dispositor Mercury (Lord 10) told the story.

I'm out of town starting tomorrow evening and without my computer (horrors!) so I will not be able to predict any more games this weekend.  Until the final four, then, fellow basketball fans!

Wait! Kentucky vs. Cornell, Take Two

Well, folks, the first lesson I have learned is that games do not start when the schedules say they will!  The actual start time of the Kentucky-Cornell game is 10:07 p.m EDT.  This means the chart I posted earlier is incorrect.  Here is the corrected chart:

Notice that the signs on cusps 10 and 4 have changed, making Lord 10 Mercury and Lord 4 Jupiter.  Also notice that the Moon has changed:  it's antiscion--19.29 Taurus--is now exactly conjunct Lord 7!  This is a strong testimony for the underdogs, Cornell.  On the other hand, now that Mercury is Lord 10 (Kentucky success), Mercury's role as dispositor of Fortuna becomes very important.  Antiscion of Fortuna is 15.50 Gemini, dispositor Mercury, and Moon will sextile antiscion Fortuna first before trining Mercury.  Moon sextile Fortuna favors the favorites, and its aspect is final (per Sports Astrology).  Does this outweigh the Moon's conjunction to cusp 7?  That, as they say, is the question.

I'm calling it for Kentucky again.  Perhaps Moon means an early lead for Cornell, but it looks like Kentucky will win in the end.  We'll see!

March Madness: Kentucky vs. Cornell

The pressure is on.  (On me, that is!)  Here's my first go at a sports event chart cast for the start of a game.  Kentucky will play Cornell at 9:57 p.m. EDT tonight in Syracuse, NY according to news sources (just about an hour from now).

In these charts, the favored team gets 1st and 10th houses, underdog 7th and 4th houses.  The 10th represents success for the favored team.  The 4th represents success for the underdog.  Moon is the flow of the action.  How do we know who is favored to win?  We check with Las Vegas.  Kentucky is favored, so they get 1st house and its ruler.  Here's the chart:

Kentucky is Mars, Cornell Venus.  Kentucky success is Sun, Cornell success is Saturn. Frawley says to forget dignity and reception in these charts.

Moon is nearish the 10th cusp--a little over four degrees away.  This should favor Kentucky, although I'd feel surer if it were nearer the cusp.  Fortuna (Part of Fortune) is disposed by the Moon.  Antiscia of Mars and Moon are in the 7th, but not near enough to the cusp to give Cornell an advantage.  The only immediately applying aspect is a square between Sun and Pluto.  Not sure this is relevant.  If so, this is likely a negative testimony for Kentucky (Pluto tending to favor the underdog and square being a difficult aspect).  Moon's next aspect is with Mercury, pretty far away at 16.44 Aries, which doesn't appear directly relevant (although it is dispositor of antiscion Fortuna).

I'm calling it for Kentucky, based on Moon near the 10th.  I'll check back in post-game!

'And so it proved'!

Cornell beat the Badgers 87-69, completely dominating the game from start to finish.  This win sends Cornell to the Sweet Sixteen, a rare occurrence for an Ivy League team.  My next prediction will likely be one of the two semi-finals.  This will be an event chart rather than a contest horary, as I cannot claim to be a fan of any other team.  Until then, happy viewing to all my fellow college basketball fans!

March Madness (Part 1 of ?): Badgers vs. Cornell

March Madness is upon us! I am currently reading Frawley's Sports Astrology (having a blast) and want to practice during this NCAA tournament. So here I am squeaking in my first prediction before today's game of Badgers vs. Cornell. I am a long-time Badgers fan, although I have not been following them closely this season. I'm counting on my long-term fan status being strong enough for this contest horary to work.

"Will Badgers beat Cornell in tomorrow's game?"
March 20, 2010, Milwaukee, WI 9:56 am CDT

Badgers are Mercury, Cornell Jupiter. There is nothing going on in either 1st or 7th houses. Mercury is in the 11th but not in the sign of the cusp. Not combust, but under the sunbeams (which go across signs)—not good. Four-and-a-half degrees separating from opposition to Saturn, which could still act as a negative factor. Just past trine with antiscion Moon (5.11 Leo), but no aspects upcoming.

Jupiter is in its own sign, although per Frawley only accidental dignity matters in contest horaries. Jupiter is in the house of its joy, the 11th, and in the same sign as the cusp. More importantly, Jupiter will sextile North node in a little over three degrees.

Alas, Badger fans, it looks like Cornell will win. I'll check back in after the game!

More than Sun signs

A client writes:  “I am an Aquarius and I tend to check the Yahoo and also the weekly column in the Shepherd Express.  For some time, they have not spoken to me at all. I realize that since each sign covers about thirty days, sometimes the reading is more geared to people whose birthdays are before or after mine.  Any thoughts on this?”

This is a great question, and I am happy to address it.
The sun sign columns one sees in various media are based on a watered-down, popularized version of astrology designed for mass consumption.  The information contained in them has no validity whatsoever.  Why?  Because they focus solely on Sun signs and absolutely nothing else. Transiting planets are compared to each zodiac sign, and the same interpretation is suggested for everyone who shares that sign.

Such writers, in effect, lump together every living person on the planet who was born in (for example) March with the Sun in Pisces and offer the same interpretation to all of them.  This is like saying, “All of you blue-eyed people out there, this is what your day will be like today!”  Clearly, this is nonsense.
There is vastly more to natal astrology than your Sun sign.  Your birth chart mirrors you, the embodied soul.  As such your horoscope is as complex, multilayered and nuanced as you yourself are.  True, your chart is comprised of several key components, one of which is the Sun.  As one of the two lights that power your chart, the Sun is very important.  But at least as important are the Moon and the Ascendant (‘rising sign’), along with the planet that rules it, called the Lord Ascendant (a traditional term).  If any planet signifies "you" in this lifetime, it is this one.  Another key component is the strongest planet in your chart—the one with the most essential dignities—called the Lord of the Geniture. This is like the trump card in your deck, your greatest resource.  Often we grow into our Lord of the Geniture over time, and the qualities it signifies are what we come to be known for.  And that is just the beginning of a true natal analysis.

We can only know how the planets in the sky today might affect you by comparing their positions now with those in your individual birth chart.  Even this technique, known as ‘transits,’ is of minor importance in real astrology.  I know some of you probably enjoy the daily Sun sign column or online astro-blurb, and are attached to reading them.  But as a serious astrologer I must tell you that those forecasts are to real astrology as cotton candy is to a good organic meal:  sweet fluff, of no real value, and not for regular consumption.
Some comfort for those of you who might be disheartened by this:  Real astrology exists. It is alive and well, albeit not in the media spotlight.  Real astrology works and is verifiable.

How long to a sale?

My good friend and fellow astrologer, whom I will call Jane Doe, must sell one of her properties as soon as possible. About four years ago she relocated for work reasons and bought a new home closer to her workplace, expecting that her first property would sell quickly. Unfortunately, just when she listed the market came to an abrupt halt and people stopped buying due to fear of market changes. This was the very beginning of the downturn in the housing market. She was unsuccessful in selling and ended up renting the property in order to handle the two mortgages. This was never a comfortable arrangement and it has troubled her off and on ever since.

Recently Jane's tenant told her that he could no longer afford to rent at the current monthly rate. Jane was faced with having to put the place up for sale or rent at a large monthly loss. She has experienced the accuracy of horary astrology in the past and so emailed me with the question, “If I list the property in April, how long to a sale?”

Feb 28, 2010, 7:39 am CST, Milwaukee, WI

We discussed the question by phone immediately--we had to clarify whether it was even valid, given how she had phrased it. Clearly her intention was to list, and right away, as the situation was demanding it. Therefore we decided it was a valid question and proceeded with judgment.

Aries on the Asc makes Mars Jane’s significator. Normally we would assign the Moon to her also, but here the Moon is Lord 4, the property. Lord 10, Saturn, is the price and Lord 7, the buyer, is Venus.

Mars is peregrine at 0 Leo and Rx, going into station. This tells us that Jane is extremely vulnerable in this situation—which she is feeling acutely! Since the tenant broke his news to her, Jane has been dealing with almost nothing else. She is exhausted.

The property is peregrine Moon in Virgo, weakly placed in the 6th. Jane confirms that the property has deteriorated somewhat under the tenant's care, although not in any major way.

Since the time of the question, Jane has had lengthy discussions about the listing price with two realtors.  As agents employed by sellers to make sales, realtors are signified by Lord 6.  The first of Jane's realtors is signified by the Sun (Leo on cusp).  The second is signified by Mercury (ruler of the next sign in the 6th, Virgo). Note that Mars is ruled by the Sun: she is at the mercy of the realtor, who decides pricing. Mars also hates Saturn: Jane hates the price, which she feels forced to accept. The price itself, Saturn, is exalted in Libra, showing that it is inflated. (All property values were inflated before the correction which is still taking place in the US markets). Note that Saturn is Rx, meaning the price is moving backwards—likely going lower. The first realtor suggested a price which was outrageously low, thus Jane's search for a second opinion. The second realtor did a lot of research and suggested a listing price that was much more palatable. Mercury in Aquarius confirms the second realtor’s interest in the price. Price (Saturn) hates the first realtor (Sun). Jane decided to go with the second realtor.

Pluto at 05.03 Cap is afflicting the Mc (4.41 Cap). There are strong forces negatively influencing the price. Several days ago, Jane found out she was subject to capital gains tax to the tune of 35K, making it even more difficult for her to break even on a sale. Essentially, Jane is between a rock and a hard place regarding this property. She is starting to think she will be lucky just to break even. Bottom line: she wants to offload the place as quickly as possible and with the least amount of loss.

Venus represents the buyer. She is exalted in Pisces (triplicity of Mars) but badly placed in the 12th. The reception is not mutual, as Jane is preoccupied with realtor and price issues.

Now to the crux of the judgment: Will Venus and Mars connect by aspect, signifying a sale? No, they do not, unless we can count Venus coming to sextile with antiscion Mars (29 Taurus), and I suspect we can't. However, Venus does aspect Mars immediately once she moves into Aries. There she is ruled by Mars and in her own detriment. Is it possible that something happens to make Venus change her mind and agree to the sale? Jane is hoping this is the case. It is pure speculation as to what this might be.  Perhaps Venus agrees to buy another property but that falls through, so she makes a deal with Jane instead. Maybe she must find a home in that area for relocation reasons even though she’d rather buy elsewhere. Given that Venus and Mars both have a major interest in the Sun, it could be that the first realtor ends up making the sale.

So, I am going with this judgment: Yes, the sale will happen, after some kind of sudden change on the buyer’s part. As for the timing, Venus at 21.20 Pisces is moving very quickly.  She will trine Mars in seven units of time.  The sale will happen before the end of April.

Jane notes that the deadline for the special tax break for first-time homebuyers is April 30, which gives her some measure of hope that this timeline is accurate. Also, as it turns out, two years ago around this time she asked me when the house would sell, and the answer at that time was two (months).  It wasn't two months, so perhaps it will prove to be two years.

Time will reveal all the details of Jane's property sale saga. Once again, stay tuned!
